Yangtze, The Long River

Nadav Kander (born in 1961 in Tel Aviv) created prolific and heterogeneous cycles of photographs since the end of the 1990s. Such miscellaneousness is nevertheless linked by recurrent themes and aesthetics, which are alienation, sadness, detachment, deserted places. His Yangtze series – which resulted from five trips initiated in 2006 – combine personal intuition and social commentary on the implacable urban development in China. His photographs propose a journey navigating by river, walking across broken bridges and ending in nearby cities almost emptied of people. He lives and works in London.



Depuis la fin des années 1990, le prolifique Nadav Kander (né en 1961 à Tel Aviv) a réalisé quantité de cycles de photographies. Cette apparente hétérogénéité possède est néanmoins cohérence au niveau des thèmes et des esthétiques qu’il ne cesse d’employer, notamment l’aliénation, la tristesse, le détachement, ou encore les espaces déserts. Son cycle Yangtze, créé à l’issue à cinq voyages accompli en 2006, allie intuition personnelle et engagement social face à l’implacable développement urbain que connaît la Chine contemporaine. Ses photographies nous proposent un voyage naviguant le long du fleuve Yangtze, pour traverser des ponts en ruine, puis finir dans des villes fantômes bordant le fleuve. Il vit et travaille à Londres.
