Lai Afong 赖阿芳 (v. 1839-1890) – aussi appelé Lai Fong – est peut-être l'un des plus célèbres photographes chinois dans le Hong Kong de la fin du 19e siècle, et l'heureux propriétaire d'un studio photographique à la longévité rare. Entre l’année d’ouverture en 1859 et les années 1940, Afong et son studio ont réalisé un des plus rares et des plus larges corpus photographiques ayant survécu à ce jour. Les thèmes vont du portrait (très populaire pour les riches clients chinois), aux vues topographiques (comme les paysages de villes ou paysages pittoresques), jusqu’aux images de la vie quotidienne. Jusqu’ici, nous avons peu d’information sur les activités des studios chinois d’avant 1870, toutefois nous savons que les premiers photographes chinois étaient initialement des peintres d’oeuvres d’exportation qui ont appris la photographie auprès d’occidentaux en tant qu’assistants. Mais les élèves ont bien vite dépassé les maitres, et les photographes chinois comme Afong ont rapidement obtenu le respect de leurs pairs et ont même engagé des photographes occidentaux dans leurs propres studios.
