Born in Taiwan in 1961, Chien-Chi Chang 张乾琦 studied at Soochow University (B.A. 1984) and at Indiana University (M.S. 1990). He joined Magnum in 1995 and became a full member in 2001. In “Double Happiness” (2005), he offers a brutal depiction of the business of selling brides in Vietnam. At first a selection of young women is offered to the men who sign up for the service. If a man chooses on of the girls and she accepts the proposal, the marriage takes place within three days. The marriage broker handles the entire affaire from selection process to ceremony. The images are accompanied by interviews with brokers, the man and the women, and sample “interviews” that take place between the potential bride and grooms as they determine the suitability of their partners. Chang’s investigation of the ties that bind one person to another draws on his own deeply divided immigrant experience.
