“When China wakes up, the world will shake”. Did this famous Napoleon’s quote declared centuries ago conditioned somehow French fear toward the Orient? As an expatriate settled in Shanghai for many years now, Eric Leleu (born in France in 1979) explores the prejudice people might have against a country whose economical power and dynamism are exploding. Created between 2004 and 2008 the series Day Dreamers reacts against French misconceptions, which diabolized China at that time. Deliberately poetic and tender, Eric Leleu’s photographs turn the assumed Chinese big bad wolves into peaceful sleepers. These images are infused with emotions, humour and seem out of step with the cliché presenting Chinese people as really hard-working people. They also remind how Asian civilizations, and notably China, seem more attentive to how human body functions.
