A Visitor from the Past
What seems so strange in the photographs from the series A visitor from the past (1999-2004)? Obviously it is the enigmatic man with his solemn expressions, whose face actually has been modelled out of Miao’s own image and symbolizes the ancient Chinese scholar. Miao Xiaochun 缪晓春 (born in 1964 in Wuxi) constantly re-invents narrative modes - that we commonly see in Chinese pictorial tradition - and questions the incompatibility between ancient and modern, oriental and occidental, faithfulness to reality and simulacra. His photographs make us realize that photography can without doubt contribute to the reconstruction of a new reality.
