Art Seasons, Singapore presents Chinese artist Pan Yue’s (b.1968) exhibition “Private Theatre." Inspired by Chinese artist and social commentator Ai Weiwei’s words “the intention to separate art from politics is itself a very political intention,” Yue says “politics is everywhere, sex is everywhere, and art is also everywhere. If arts existence is reasonable, then its non-existence is also unreasonable.” Yue manipulates icons such as Mao with the industrial revolution in a pop-art context. His work is an expression of the confusion of cultural identity that is typically seen in modern China. He is often known to have an expressive, erotic style of art that makes him distinct among Chinese artists today.
