The French journalist and Sinologist Agnès Gaudu (born in 1958 in Paris) is currently the head of the Asian department at the weekly journal Courrier international. Her background in Chinese studies and Journalism led her to live in China several times from 1979 onwards. Active in many conferences, she has published a great number of articles that examine the changing aspects of Chinese society. In fall 1988, she embarked on a survey in China that preceded the outbreak of the pro-democratic movement in June 1989. She reported her experience only few weeks after through a publication.
This private archive was systematically captioned and classified by its owner, who utilised mainly two cameras: Praktica and Nikon FE. In a fairly good state of preservation, this archive has never been digitized until now, except for a few images in the 1980s for the sake of Gaudu’s journalistic activities. Today it is held in Gaudu’s home, only a few were kept in the agency SIPA Press (demonstrations after Hu Yaobang’s death in 1989).
