Ferit Kuyas (born in 1955 in Istanbul, Turquey) has embraced photography after having following studies in law and architecture. His first visit in Shanghai for commissioned work marked a watershed in his connexion with China for he went back there many times thereafter. In City of Ambition (2009) he proposes a personal and contradictory view of Chongqing - one of the largest and thus vivid city in the world – in which places appear almost depopulated or under-construction. As many of his contemporaries who are fascinated by Chinese unequalled urban burgeoning, Ferit Kuyas attempts to draw a picture of a typical Chinese city that has almost lost the credentials to be a proper metropolis, as if it became disqualified.
Ferit Kuyas lives and works in Luchsingen and Zürich. He is considered one of the most important architectural photographers in Switzerland. His work is characterized by eclectic previsual research, great care and openness to the object, place or personality which is at the center of his work. While whole bodies of work are dedicated to particular objects or places, sometimes just the light may play the main role, telling us of worlds yet to be entered.
