Liu Tao 刘涛 (born in 1985 in Gao’an, Jiangxi province, China) is a lone wanderer who invites us to lose our way in puzzling landscapes. Situated on the border between photography and performance, his series have been reflecting upon his conceptions of freedom and introspection.
Liu Tao rethinks street photography and self-portraiture by imprinting his naked body in the landscape. “We get dressed to hide that we are as fragile as dust. When you undress, you reconnect with nature, and you realize that the whole world is nothing but dust,” he says.
Consumed by wanderlust, he ventures across cities and suburban areas in search of the spot that would echo his deep sense of alienation in face of a globalized China. Liu Tao has indeed developed deep concerns about contemporary Chinese society, notably its attempts to make a clean break with the past and its destructive velocity.
