RegexPIC
The Research Time: 2006 - now
The Research Methods: Looking for images with singleness of purpose, clear graphical symbols, lack of narrative, and signified from daily life. Then extract these images that are flattened, abstracted, and graphically clear. Objectively sampling, enlarging or inverting them, or changing the visual habits of composition, to obtain a completely exclusive image of the images. Finally, expand, observe and research the similarity of these images.
The Research Objectives: After extracting the samples, observe and analyze the various possibilities of the audience's image cognition.
The Research Subject: Pictures on food packaging, advertising in magazines, or educational illustrations in books are some of the essential images used to help illustrate the original objects.
The Research Focus: These images may have been alienated and manipulated to promote their main content. When they are completely isolated, the logical information shaped in the original context becomes absurd and dramatic due to the reduction of the picture itself. How should we judge when faced with such kidnapped, fictitious, and simulated graphical symbols?
The Research Conclusion:
1) There is a strong correlation between this strangeness and this way of getting "close-up".
Generally speaking, to get the close-up effect of the image, we need to change the focal segment of the lens or zoom in and recompose. This gives the object a complete perspective and depth of field relationship, both logically independent and complete. However, the "close-up shots" presented in the work are forcibly taken from the flat pictures. The obtained images have been stripped of information and lack the depth of field corresponding to the close-ups of objects. The image we're looking at would be particularly incomplete.
2) There is not too much knowledge that needs in-depth attention in the images of the work, but a quick interpretation of graphical information.
This kind of information is the cognitive basic image that shows the basic properties of the image. When the audience observes the image, they don't think of anything else based on its extended meaning. Instead, it gives clues to the interpretation of the image through changes in the image itself. At the moment, these images are viewed without interference from a particular context or context of cues.
3) "look at the picture" refers to its literal meaning, and then take the flattened and symbolic information as an object or thing for re-sampling, high-resolution retaking or even scanning, to record the low-fidelity image mixed with paper texture clues, to make it have high-fidelity material properties.
They seem to lack the details of the "objects of expression" in image culture, but this medium has a great deal of details of the solid whole material; For example, the particles and impurities of paper, the materialized CMYK color points that constitute these image forms, and the color development points of TV image, all of which are transformed into a whole. What people see is a basic image of our two-dimensional visual cognition.
About the artist
Liu Yue 刘月(b. 1981) was born and currently resides in Shanghai. Liu Yue's works often take objective things as the starting point, through the extreme intervention of cognitive experience, making the process of in-depth research have a strong sense of agnosticism and the unknown. In this kind of clue which is always parasitized by the cognitive limitation, the objective subject of cognition will also form a strong anti-materiality with a paradoxical logic. It makes people curious to observe the connection between the whole context and the concrete things in the cognitive process with the potential of falsification. Under those limiting extrapolations, the cognition creates "cracks" in itself. This process of extracting and purifying "impurities" from the essence of things is exactly what Liu Yue is extremely obsessed with.
Liu Yue was nominated for the Art Sanya Huayu Youth Award in 2017, and nominated for the Jimei Arles Discovery Award in 2021.
