I took them when I was nineteen, working as a French embassy secretary from 1965 to 1968, and discovering China.” This quote from Solange Brand (born in 1946 in Paris) might summarize the above shown pictures. Devoid of any critical intention, Brand created “personal memento of a moment”. She seized people inspiring faces, massive crowd gatherings, as well as the cultural production of this new movement that would mark the history of China. These pictures have been packed in boxes for forty years and now offer rare informal views in colour of China’s Cultural Revolution. Her Agfacolor prints counteract with the black and white photographs that prevailed in the press at that time.
