At first painter, Wang Qingsong 王庆松 (born in 1966 in the Heilongjiang province) gradually abandoned this medium so that to plunge himself entirely into photography. Wang draws on his personal experience of post-1980s China: the post economic reform period during which everything goes a thousand miles an hour, everything seems possible yet uncertain. His overscaled photographs require hundreds of models, still he does not hesitate to disguise himself as a teacher, a military officer, a Chinese literati, a librarian, among other whimsical characters. Gigantic and colourful, Wang’s photographs interweave « Gaudy Art », kitsch, Western and Chinese pictorial traditions, revolution imagery, humour, and acerbic critique of Chinese society.
