Wang Tingting 王亭亭 (born in 1986 in Kunming, Yunnan province, China) dreamt to discover new worlds. At the age of eighteen, she left her hometown to migrate to Shanghai and afterwards to Montpellier in southern France. Wang’s background is rather atypical: she first studied sociology at the East China Normal University in Shanghai (2004), then completed a BA in ethnology at the Université Montpellier III (2009), and finally graduated in 2013 from the Parisian photography school called EFET (École photo et Formation à la Photographie).
In her series Contenants du passé [Containers of the past], Wang has examined mundane everyday objects from the past that are bound to us by ties of singular intimacy. « The everyday life of the past forges our personal identities, and the ordinary objects are the materialized clues, » she explains.
Wang has been collecting over the years old tableware that belonged to her own family members. By reviving these objects and playing around with them in her colourful still lives, she has freed them from the strict frameworks of personal memories, turning them into components of a new space-time dimension.
