Chen Jiagang 陈家刚 (born in 1962 in Chongqing) was first trained as an architect and founded the Chengdu Upriver Museum and Kunming Upriver Museum. He began his photography career around 2003 with his series Third Front – followed by The Great Third Front in 2008 -, which primarily tackle vanishing collective histories by creating intriguing pictures in large-format of obsolete military cities constructed during the 1960s (called the ‘Third Line’). Here, the past-idealised vision of Chinese industrial grandeur is transformed into an anxious inquiry into lost memories and the uncertain future of these leftover zones.
