The artist under the guise of an acrobat with a thousand faces, is a self-taught artist with humble origins. “How about you, didn’t you fell any joy?” This sentence, uttered by Li Wei 李暐 (born in 1970 in Hubei province) during an interview after one of his performances in France, sums up his personality and approach. He offers us a simple work, like a hymn to happiness. For him, photography becomes a means to share a life philosophy, in which it is possible to debate serious problems in a humorous manner. Reality and fantasy meet, clash and reveal each other through an art that he himself describes as “crazy”, “instinctive” and “sincere”. Li Wei mocks our own view of things, preferring to ridicule contemporary society rather than approach it dramatically. He has invented a simple iconography whose symbols make sense in a global context. According to him, one of his dearest wishes is to create a little joy and freedom in our lives. Mission accomplished.
