Teresa Eng spent time as an artist in resident in China in 2012 and 2015, observing the rapid development the cities and its surroundings. With “Self/Portrait”, Teresa presents portraits of Chinese millennials that she approached in a shopping centre alongside one of their selfie from their mobile phone. The portraits, introspective by nature, are lit by the bright LED advertisements. In contrast, each subject’s selfie reveals details of their lives and interests as well as how they want to be seen. “Self/Portrait” speaks of individualisation in a transitioning capitalist society as well as the need to belong.
Teresa Eng (b. Vancouver, Canada) is a photographer who lives and works in London, England. Her work explores the inevitability of change through personal histories. Teresa was awarded the 2019 Burtynsky Grant and was a finalist for the 2019 Aperture Portfolio Prize, Images Vevey Book award and Hyères 33e festival of fashion and photography. Her first book, “Speaking of scars’, was shortlisted for the 2013 Aperture/Paris Photo First Book Award. Her work has been featured in Aperture, British Journal of Photography, World Press Photo, New Yorker, The Guardian, Financial Times, It’s Nice That, Vogue Italia, and Photoworks.
