We are very excited about our conference at Aarhus University on 26th April 2022, in connection with the play Ren Hang in Peace (R.H.I.P.) at Galleri Image.
China is the earths most populated country and photography, as a very popular medium, has of course a very long history in this old country with a long history. The Lecture “Photography in China and its Histories” by Dr Marine Cabos-Brullé will provide a deeper perspective on the histories of photography and its growing importance in China, a perspective that is lesser known in Denmark.
The lecture is intended as an elaborating event for the play Ren Hang in Peace (R.H.I.P) about the internationally renowned Chinese art photographer Ren Hang, known for his body positive depictions of the Chinese youth population, who challenged Chinese censorship. The play follows his life, work, artistic practice, struggles and his early death at the age of 27 by suicide.
About the Lecture
Today in China, photography is playing an increasing important role locally. This is particularly noticeable in the flourishing market, the burgeoning of photography festivals, specialised institutions and publishers, which have endeavoured to support the production of photography. From an international perspective, numerous scholarly research, exhibitions and special media coverage testify to the growing interest in photographs of China in recent years. This appetite for photographs is accompanied by a desire to re-collect China’s past, due to the dramatic loss of artefacts after over a hundred years of political and social turmoil. This lecture will explore the changing practices and multiples trajectories that have moulded photography in China. We will examine the reception of photographs in contemporary China, while shedding light on early developments. The lecture will offer insight into how a great variety of players have shaped and reshaped almost two centuries of Chinese visual culture.
Ren Hang in Peace (R.H.I.P) can be seen in Galleri Image from 22 -28 April 2022 after opening hours. Tickets can be bought here: https://www.teaterbilletter.dk/forestillinger/ren-hang-in-peace-r-h-i-p/
The lecture is supported by the S.C. Van Foundation and Aarhus University
