Organised by Fetart Association, Les Rencontres Photographiques du 10e celebrates its 8th anniversary this year. For this year 2019, they imagined the Biennale as a photographic walk full of surprises. A walk through the streets and the iconic places of this borough at the heart of Paris.
For a month the photography will be there everyday and everywhere in the territory. To enrich the experience of the visitors, either adult or young, there will be various events such as ateliers, meetings and guided tours. Their intent is to make contemporary photography approachable for everybody, keeping in mind the exigency for the quality of the images displayed. The Rencontres Photographiques du 10e is a generous, rich and creative event that mirrors this arrondissement.
The city hall will be the key location showing the twelve winners of the call for application, which include three authors who bring alternative visions of contemporary China. First Raphaël Bourelly and Sébastien Tixier and their series “Shanshui”. In the Chinese culture and since ancient times, the observation of nature was raised to the art rank. The traditional “Shan Shui” painting, literally translated into “Mountain- Water”, perpetuates the tribute to streams and mountains. Today, the regions of the centre of China, irrigated by the Yellow River and by the steep areas, challenge these traditions. The government politics focus on the challenge of industrialisation and urbanisation’s development. This is why there is such pollution in this river, known in ancient times as “The Mother River”. Moreover, the Chinese government undertook the planarization of many mountains in order to facilitate the urban and economic progress in these regions.
Then Gabriel Gauffre and his series “Brulures (Burns)”, which is the fruit of an accident. An accepted failure, born at the bottom of a dark room in the ancient French district in Shanghai. A method of street photography transcended by its own process of production. In the era of Internet, everybody seems to succeed or to show that his social, professional, love life is a success. Gorged with quotes and tutorials. The digital human being has to always face the apparent success of others through an unbridled, stressful, and frightening life. This power to filter the projected image is gifted to everybody and this let us lose sight of the life as something also composed by failures. Brulures reminds the spectators that these mistakes are not there just to hinder, but they are an integral part of the individuals; they build them, becoming the pillars that support their successes.
