Published on the occasion of exhibition "Ouyang Chun: The Mortals" at ShanghART, Shanghai
The images and materials shown in this catalogue came from the artist Ouyang Chun's childhood home, the old residential buildings of the Xi'an University of Technology, where he revisited three times before the whole compound was demolished, to collect 12 tons of materials which he later assembled into more than 30 installation works. These items carry not only tales of the diaspora of the Chinese intellectuals, but also a history of raging internal conflicts between cultural ideologies, and an art history alive with the mixture of timeless beauty and signatures of an era.
